Gunite Swimming Pool Resurfacing

Monday, January 26th, 2009

I can’t tell you haw many people call me who are upset about trying to resurface their own gunite swimming pool. If you search the Web for DIY gunite swimming pool resurfacing you will get a number of bad ideas. The first bad idea is to chip the marcite off of the Gunite pool wall and resurface it with new marcite or diamond brite. This certainly isn’t something you want to try doing yourself. Even the contractors won’t give you more than a 1 year warranty on this kind of work (3 years in California by law). People will tell you that marcite or diamond brite lasts 10+ years on a resurface but if you search the Web for marcite failures you will find a boatload of horror stories. I like to call them plaster disasters.

The second option you will find for resurfacing a gunite pools is a fiberglass shell that you put on yourself.  I have personally used these systems in my old contracting business.

(1) If you don’t do it right you will have instant failure of the pool’s membrane.

(2) Fiberglass is not a DIY swimming pool application. Don’t believe me? Watch this video http://www.poolrestoration.com/fibervideo.html

The third option you will find for resurfacing gunite pools is UltraGuard. In my humble opinion it is the best  DIY pool resurfacing solution on the market today. To learn more check us out at www.plasterpoolresurfacing.com – Ken
